Anyone ever seen this stuff then? If you have you'll have to be either
- Fairly (I hesitate to say very) old or
- You've raided your granny's medicine cupboard.
Not sure why anyone would do the latter, and yet that's exactly how I came to posses this jar of wonderment. A friend got it from his gran's house and presented it to me because he knows of my love of chillies.
At first glance you may think it's culinary but no, it's medicinal, probably for "external use only" although it doesn't say so anywhere on the jar. It says it is
"A concentrated Application containing the Stimulating Properties of the Capsicum Fruit"
and bears the instructions
"To be applied with Brisk Rubbing until a Warm Glow is obtained" (their capitalisation).
I presume it's an early version of things like Deep Heat. It has the texture of petroleum jelly and smells of nothing in particular, although any scent has probably been lost in the annals of time.

God only knows how old it is. Judging by the label and the above legends I'd put it at pre war, or certainly no later than the 50's.
Googling it provided no results whatsoever, and not much at all for Losall's. What happened to them? Did they simply go out of business, or did they get amalgamated into one of the bigger pharmaceutical companies? If anyone stumbles across this page and has come across this stuff before, leave a comment.

Wow. A product from before the internet.
Not sure I'd like to rub anything containing chillies on any of my body though...
Not sure I'd like to rub anything on me that had had Ash's grannie's fingers in it!
