Today's cheeseboard, bought in Masham on our day out on Good Friday, consisted of just three cheeses. Clockwise from the top they were Coverdale, Dovedale Blue and "smoked goats cheese". I'd have rather that that one had more provenance than that, but that's all the information that they gave. Again all three were lovely (find a good deli and you'll find good cheeses), the blue being the pick of the bunch for me, as I'm a big lover of blues. Nothing like a Stilton, it was a firmer and less crumbly texture, and the veins had a grainy texture to them which I found most appealing. The smoked goat's was not overly smoked nor overly goaty, a good balance, and in texture a little like a softer Edam. The Coverdale was wife's favourite, being like a softer, creamier Wensleydale, having a very similar taste but very different texture.
At the 7 o'clock position in the photo are five dates. They're immense. And they're fresh. I guess the size is down to that, I suppose ones that aren't fresh shrink a bit as part of the preserving process. They were soft, sticky, sweet, enormous and the most wonderful fruit ever. Well, along with fresh-picked figs on Symi. Worth going to Tunis for? Maybe!
Wife is "all cheesed out" at the moment, so no more cheeseboards for us until May Day at the earliest.
