Old Town

We'd noted on the map of "local facilities" in our apartment a large
indoor market on a road that led up to Paphos old town so we decided
to go and take a look (we love markets). The road it was on was one
we've not walked before either, coming from a different direction to
which we'd approach it on our previous stays in Paphos.

Nice road! Quite a few interesting shops including a couple of Russian
supermarkets and a fabulous bakery (naturally cakes were bought).

The indoor market wasn't, I don't think, a true market, being more of
a huge fruit & veg shop with butchers & fishmonger attached. It was
rather like George Bolam's in Sedgefield. It was wonderous though with
fruit and veg of every size, shape and variety, many of which we
didn't know. Perhaps one was the mysterious Tarot Root that we always
get served at 7 St Georges. The also had a vat full of live snails!

Up in town we found ourselves there in glorious sunshine for the first
time ever, we usually pick cloudy or even rainy days to go there. We
also found ourselves in a part of town we'd never been to, with a
parade of trendy cafes with loads of outside seating. A glass of wine
in the sun (a bailey's frappé for wife) was soon being enjoyed,
accompanied by the un-understandable chatter of the dozens of Cypriots
(mainly men, only 2 women amongst them) who were also there. That's
what we love, places filled with locals and not with tourists.

We had a wander round town, taking some sunny photos here and there,
especially of the mosque, then had a Cypriot coffee (don't dare use
the word Turkish here) and a piece of Cypriot delight (ditto) at a
Kafemion with a panoramic view of the ocean and town.

After that a walk back to the apartment for lunch and ready for the
next part of the day - Greek Easter Celebrations.

Sent from my iPod.
