So we arrived in Piraeus at 14.20, by 15.20 we'd got to central
Athens, checked into the hotel and got back out onto the streets to go
exploring. Naturally we had to do the Acropolis and the grey skies and
generally cooler weather made this a much more pleasant experience
than it would otherwise have been. Unfortunately it also ruined our
photos, but we made the best of it. On a day like we'd been having up
till now we'd have been too frazzled to see anything.
We did the Acropolis and most of the other things within the
"archealogical park" such as the ancient agora and temple of dionysos,
though there is a ton of stuff we haven't seen - plenty for another
visit or two.
After all that we had a quick shower and went back out to a restaurant
that we'd spotted while out and about. Called Kuzina it has fabulous
views of the Acropolis and Agora and fabulous food! We shared as
delicious salad with kythean goat's cheese, Santorini tomatoes and
crostini then each had a risotto of pumpkin, raisins and corn. This
was fairly sweet but not too much so. The service was outstanding,
with each dish (and even the water) announced and described when it
arrived. Prices were the highest of the holiday, but still well worth
it for the food, service and setting.
It poured with rain briefly - thank goodness for canopies. Rain, I'd
forgotten what that was.
Tired but happy (and very full) we returned to the hotel, ready for
bed and the flight home tomorrow.
