The Long And Winding Road

We hired a car today to see a bit of Naxos that we've not seen so far.
While we didn't do what has come to be known as a "Smith's Tour" we
did see a fair bit. We had a look at the mountain village of Moni and
it's church of Agios Drossiani, one of the most important old churches
on the island. We also visited the village of Apiranthos, a
picturesque place of marble streets and buildings filled with a
labyrinth of alleyways, arches and steps. In both of these places we
were promised "cool mountain air" but found none - it was hotter up
there than on the coast, away from the cooling sea breeze.
Eventually we ended up at Appolonas, a small fishing harbour village
with a lovely beach backed by cafes and tavernas. We had feta filled
crepes and a superb plate of home made chips then took to the sea for
a cooling dip that we were well in need of.
We returned via the coastal route, which (not) coincidentally took us
past the Kouros, a giant unfinished statue to Dionyses. The road back
was torturously twisting, moreso even than the road up, and with the
added "bonus" of having us on the dangerous, outer side on all of the
hairpins. Luckily in the close on 50km we drove we passed about 7 cars
coming the other way, and 5 of those were on the last 10km. This meant
I could drive the whole way in the middle of the road!
I was bushed when we got back, the constant concentration and the
constant effort (we never drove straight once) left me a bit drained -
I had to take a nap before we went out for the evening! Well worth it
though, we saw some lovely scenery and interesting antiquities.

Mr Smith didn't need a nap after our tour of Tinos - it was straight to the restaurant for us
