Wow Syros doesn't get nearly enough press in tourist guides. We saw a
view of a Syros feature for the first time in the Speedrunner's on
board magazine that is simply stunning, and spent the whole afternoon
there. This is the swimming lido below St. Nicolas's church in
Ermoupoli. If it was in Mykonos it would be in every book and on every
postcard!
The whole town is gorgeous with neoclassical architecture everywhere
and a lovely waterfront. A little disappointing at lunch time that the
cafe we had chosen had run out of desserts but this is quite common -
trying to get dessert any time after breakfast is almost always
troublesome!
We're not even attempting the walk up to Ano Syros until morning, the
sun will be cooler then and also in the right direction for photos.
The sun sets over the back of the town's hill and this has provided us
with blessed relief. It's the first hotel we've stayed at on this trip
where the setting sun doesn't blaze into our hotel room, turning it
into an oven. Note to self: forget nice views, ALWAYS get an east
facing hotel room!
