Having had "Greek food" just about every day for a week we decided to opt for Pizza instead last night. Mesklies was the one we chose, one of the string of cafes and restaurants that line the road behind the old harbour. Various guides (and the person at the hotel) say to avoid these places. I don't know why - they play to the local crowd more than to tourists and for that reason alone are quite appealing to us.
We certainly weren't disappointed - the Greek Pizza (feta, tomato, onion, green pepper and fabulously tasty fresh oregano) was delicious and huge! We're certainly glad we didn't get a pizza each, but shared one. The place was full of locals and Greek holidaymakers, there wasn't an English voice to be heard. Along with the other cafes that sit shoulder to shoulder along here there was quite a buzz, animated and excited talking and a lot of laughter. It was lovely.
Afterwards we went to a bar that had looked quite appealing. I had a "karafaki" which is a 200ml jug of Raki, a Greek firewater that is an aquired taste. For only €3 it was a real bargain. The bar turned out to be The Tom Cat, which was one we'd wanted to try because of our Charley boy. We found it by chance! Once again we were the only English in, in fact it begins to feel like we're the only English on the island!
Perfect.
