Scorchio

Probably the hottest day so far, certainly the hottest feeling day,
perhaps due to less of a cooling breeze than previous days.
It started out cloudy though - so cloudy that it forced a change of
plan when our trip to Kechrovouni Convent hit thick cloud in the
mountains. Rather than drive on almost blind, we headed for sea level
again and spent an hour in Kionia. When we returned the cloud base had
lifted but it was still there. This made for disappointing photos -
white buildings against white sky doesn't work too well. It was still
a very interesting visit and wife added another relic to her
collection in the shape of Pelagia's skull.
After this we headed for Kardiani. This was lovely, a beautiful
village built high on a hillside above a double bay down below. There
are paths down to the beaches, but we were over 1000 feet above sea
level and there's no way we fancied that descent, let alone the climb
back, in the windless heat that had now developed.
After Kardiani we went on to Isternia. Similarly situated to Kardiani
it is a village with much marble work and a lovely, rather large,
church. Unusually it was open - it's been quite a disappointment to
come across so many locked churches on this trip.
We were almost melting by now so we headed back the most direct way to
hit the beach at Agios Ioannis Porto. This is really two beaches down
either side of a promentory. Both are of dissappointingly dark sand
that stays strangely wet and soft, I can't say we were awfully keen on
it. The sea was nice though, warm and clean, though quite choppy in
one of the bays but calm in the other. We went in the choppy one for
some reason, and I had fun riding the swell.
Eventually, after fresh orange juices in the Puki Beach Bar we
returned to the hotel, where I inexplicably turned across the oncoming
traffic without even looking. Panagia Pelagria was watching over us
though and nothing came of it.
