Dinner in Deryneia

We'd arranged to meet Marie for dinner at a taverna of her choosing,
Misohoro in Deryneia. Deryneia's main claim to fame is its proximity
to the buffer zone and the ghost town of Famagusta. Apparently some
cafes and tavernas there are built facing this vista and have
binoculars and telescopes to let you take it all in.

We saw none of that, Misohoro is a proper, traditional taverna set in
the main square next to the very picturesque church. Its menu is
largely mezze format, including a vegetarian version which three of us
went for.

This was very much a more traditional (or at least more typical) style
of mezze than that at 7 St Georges in Geriskipou where you are
presented with single carrots or single leeks. Each dish of this mezze
was fairly substantial, the kind I'd order 3 or 4 of if we were making
a mezze for two. The number of dishes we had came to 10 or 11! These
were:

Dips (Tahini, tzatziki, potato, olives)
Bread

Chips (yes chips, but really good home made ones)
Courgette & greens with egg
Greek salad
Couscous
Veg Tavas (veg in a sort of red wine & cinnamon sauce - first time
I've ever had this delicious dish)
Grilled tomatoes & mushrooms
Saganaki feta
Grilled Haloumi
Fried Courgettes
Fried Cauliflower

Fruit including a local one called Espina which we eventually worked
out is Medlar.

This was a fabulous meal and with a couple of drinks came in at a very
reasonable €17 per head. No wonder this is the only place that
actually gets a mention in The Rough Guide.
