The Limassol Coast - Zygi

Today was a day for exploring the coast south of where we're staying and east of Limassol. First stop was Zygi, stopping off on the way at the shopping heaven of "Zygi Crossroads". This is a weird place, on a crossroads in the middle of nowhere it has all sorts of shops, several of them "corner shop" style (Peripteros they call them here), fish monger, butcher, pharmacy, shoe shop, tavernas, and so on. Presumably they've sprung up here to service the local rural communities. We did a bit of shopping...

On to Zygi proper then. This is one weird place. It's grown into the area's prime "Fish Taverna" centre, and presumably the fish is landed fresh at its fishing harbour. This harbour is HUGE, at least 4 maybe 5 times bigger than it needs to be, with a stack of empty berthing piers. The whole sea front and several streets behind are lined with fish taverna after fish taverna, some looking very swish, some very ramshackle, some enormous (like the biggest fish restaurants I've EVER seen) and some minute. How do you choose one faced with such a selection? A moot point for us, fish is not on our menu. Pork maybe, fish no.

So that was Zygi. How do such places spring up? It would be interesting to see it when it's packed with diners, if that ever happens - that would be thousands of people!
